Plants > Marionberry > "Santiam" |
"Santiam" Marionberry Early accounts from Oregon pioneers in the 1800's describe a lucious type of blackberry that grew wild in the Santiam Valley located southeast of the capital Salem. Today we know these plants as marionberries, a wonderfully sweet type of blackberry with its own distinctive rosey, floral taste. Marionberries have become an American favorite as an integral part of "Razzleberry" deserts, that is, a combination of red raspberries, strawberries, and marionberries used to make pies, turnovers, jams, cakes, and more. Our marionberry plant stock is from the origional variety that grew in the wild and has been cultivated for over 100 years. Plants are very vigorous and will spread if not kept in check. Zones: 5 - 10 (-10° F.) Height: does best trimmed to 5 feet Spacing: in rows 5 - 8 feet Depth: set canes 2" - 12" lower Spread: to 8 feet Sun/Shade: full sun to part shade Pollinator: self Yield: very heavy Foliage: green, purple into winter Blooms: May - June Fruit: Large, juicy; well seeded. Comments: They are very easy to grow and our variant will do well in most northern climates. Naturally resistant to most insect damage. Southern gardeners should provide some shading. Very sweet with floral undertones. Fruit is highly prized and processes or freezes very well. Berries are born on second year cane growth which is trimmed off after harvest to make way for new cane formation for the next year.
